Big Bang 4” was performed at BNL’s recently dedicated Brookhaven Square to celebrate the lab’s return to normalcy after several years of COVID lockdowns and mandates as well as to welcome the lab’s new director, Dr. JoAnne Hewett. This was the first Big Bang concert to be performed outdoors and it was a tremendous success with an equally tremendous turnout:

After a long hiatus due to COVID, the BNL Rock & Blues Music Club has re-emerged in the lab performance scene under its new name, SUPERNOVA. After a successful performance in May for “Wellness Day,” we rocked another performance a month later for “Safety Day.” Here’s a video of an original song we wrote and tried out for the first time:

Club members performed at Berkner Hall for “BNL’s Got Talent” show. This show was hosted by our club and was open to Lab employees (and family members), guests and the summer interns. All were invited to show off any talent they may have. The club provided several musical numbers before, after and between acts. A 3-judge panel was present to rate the acts.

The 1st concert performed by the new version of the Music Club (performing musicians) was dubbed the “Big Bang” concert to benefit the United Way charity (specifically towards the Hurricane Relief Fund set up in response to several hurricanes that had an impact on the U.S. recently):

THE ORIGINAL MUSIC CLUB WAS CREATED TO FACILITATE THE HIRING OF OUTSIDE MUSICIANS TO PERFORM AT THE LAB. EVENTUALLY, THE LAB NO LONGER ALLOWED OUTSIDE PERFORMERS ON SITE. THIS NEW RULE WAS THE CATALYST WHICH TRANSFORMED THE ORIGINAL CLUB TO BECOME A CLUB FOR THE PURPOSE OF GETTING TOGETHER TO PLAY MUSIC OURSELVES.  Come and join us for an enjoyable evening listening to the music of ‘Spider’ John Koerner at 8pm on Friday, April 16th in the North Room of Brookhaven Center located at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY 11973. 

In addition to the Friday night concert, on Saturday at noon, at the Laboratory, Koerner will offer a 12-string guitar and harmonica workshop where he will share his unique history and style. The workshop cost is $35 person and is limited to ten participants.

 The Prodigals – March 6

UPTON, NY – The Irish rock band The Prodigals will give a concert at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on Friday, March 6, at 8:00 p.m. at the Brookhaven Center.

The Prodigals are considered to be one of the most successful bands to emerge from the East-Coast Irish scene. While the band members largely grew up in Ireland, their current roots are in Manhattan. The band’s set list includes a variety of original funky and energetic Celtic songs. They have played in venues throughout the United States – Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, Boston, and Maine – as well as in Canada and Germany. In addition to entertaining the audience with guitars and percussion, these musicians enliven their performance with banjo and button accordion.

Our Thirteenth Concert,  “A Southern Thaw” Two Rock Bands — Brother Peach and Street Survivors  —  at Brookhaven Lab, January 24

Upton, NY – Two rock groups — Brother Peach and Street Survivors — will perform in a concert called “A Southern Thaw” at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on Saturday, January 24, at 8 p.m. in Berkner Hall. The concert is open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and older must bring a photo ID.

Brother Peach will perform the best of the famous rock band with southern roots, the Allman Brothers. The local group has performed at numerous Long Island venues, including the Funky Monkey and Calico Jack’s in Oceanside, the Village Pub South and Molly Bloom’s in Amityville, the Fire Island Grill in Oakdale, and the Hairy Lemon in Selden. Recently, they performed with the classic rock cover band, Roadhouse.

The Street Survivors will play the best of the southern rock group, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Like Brother Peach, the Street Survivors have performed at the Funky Monkey in Oceanside, and they have also played at such venues as CPI in Hampton Bays, Cashmere’s in Shirley, the Village Pub in Port Jefferson, and the Maples in Manorville.

Meeting at the Crossroads’ Blues Concert, March 20, 2004

“Meeting at the Crossroads,” a blues concert featuring Joe Vicino and the Smokedaddys and The Dare Ya Blues Band, will be held in Berkner Hall at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on Saturday, March 20, at 8 p.m. Sponsored by the BNL Music Club, the concert will be open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.

Joe Vicino and the Smokedaddys, featuring Vicino on guitar and lead vocals, Pete Kiernan on bass and Ralph Santiago on drums, have played at many local venues, including the Yankee Peddler in Merrick, Giacomo Jack’s in Amityville, and Belle’s East in Southampton. Their musical influences range from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Jimi Hendrix and Motown to Chicago blues. The band has recorded four CDs, with a fifth due out this spring.

The Dare Ya Blues Band is made up of five musicians who are veterans of the Long Island music scene. Band mates Johnny Dunn and Luke Alvino have rejoined, combining their talents in songwriting and performing. The band plays original blues, while adding some unique twists to their favorite cover songs. They have played at such clubs as The Viking in Islip, Nawlin’s Grille in Mineola, Paula Jean’s in Setauket, and the A&M Roadhouse in New York City. The band’s second CD, titled “Lonely Street,” is completed and will be available at the show.

February 15, 2003 was the Songwriters Series

The BNL Music Club and the East End Songwriters Guild  presented their first Songwriters Series at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory featuring eight local songwriters. Opening the show was Kristhen, an acoustic guitar duo featuring Henry Diaz on guitar and the lovely voice of Kristi Diaz. This was followed by “songwriters-in-the-round” performances of singer/guitarists Bill Akin and Mark Mott, singer/guitarist/violinist Sarah Greene with Dennis Raffelock on vocals and upright bass and Terin Greene on vocals. The second half of the program was kicked off by Terry Winchell followed by E.E.S.G. cofounder, singer/songwriter/guitarist/ Larry Hunter accompanied by well known slide guitarist Ray Penney. Headlining and closing the show was Cathy Kreger  who held the audience in rapture for the remainder of the evening.


March 1st, 2003 in conjunction with the Long Island Blues Society was called The Gathering Of The Slides and featured the Kerry Kearney Band. Also appearing were special guest artists Michael Falzarano, Kane Daly and Little Toby Walker.  To date this was the most successful BNLMC concert both artistically and in ticket sales. A great time was had by both concert-goers and musicians.

Featured original compositions by LI Singer-Songwriters Jim Dexter and Bill Meehan. Jim and Bill performed at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on Saturday, December 14, at 8 p.m. in Berkner Hall. Both Long Island artists are proficient acoustic guitarists and songwriters in their own right. Dexter and Meehan each presented a set of their original works to an enthusiastic audience.

Our First Annual Christmas Concert  Thursday, December 6th, featured Kristhen, James O’Malley  and the BNL Gospel Choir. Through the efforts of all involved we were able to raise $450 for the Little Flower Children’s Services in Wading River.
